Manhattan Beach Engagement Session | Jane and Adam
A common misconception with photography is that it’s bad to shoot in overcast conditions. I’m happy to tell you this is so not true! Shooting under a cloudy sky can create beautiful soft skin tones with light that is flattering from every angle. Since you don’t have to worry as much about which direction the sun is coming from, there are so many more options for where you can shoot as well.
When Jane and Adam showed up the Manhattan Beach Pier for their Engagement Session, they seemed really concerned about light. The pier was basically inside a cloud of thick fog and we could barely see the sun through the blanket of haze. I quickly explained to them how amazing their images would still look because of the natural light filter the fog was creating. While the images wouldn’t have that backlit, golden look you see in some of my images, they would still be gorgeous.
The space under the Manhattan Beach Pier is one of my favorite spots to shoot. Don’t tell anyone…although I’m pretty sure this “not so secret” location is already quite well know. The warm tones in the sand reflect onto my subject’s skin while the gorgeous textures of the pier in the back ground make the image appear to be a watercolor painting. Not to mention, the lines of the pier create a dramatic affect that draws the viewers eyes to the center of the image.
I was so happy with the dreamy feel the fog added to Jane and Adam’s Engagement Session images. As a natural light photographer, this is another beautiful look you can capture with ease to create a mood that feels different than what you might usually see on a sunny day. Jane and Adam’s Peninsula Chicago Wedding had very similar lighting which you can see in their gorgeous Chicago Union Station portraits.
